Durham nightclub named Europe’s worst closes after 50 years as Dominic Cummings (who worked there) pays tribute to ‘the best nightclub outside Moscow’.

A Durham nightclub dubbed “the worst in Europe” has closed its doors after more than 40 years in business, as Dominic Cummings who worked there has paid tribute.

Klute, known for its sticky dance floors, cheesy tunes and crowded atmosphere, reportedly closed its doors for the last time on April 20.

The nightclub was previously labeled “Europe’s second worst” by FHM magazine, but it claimed the top spot by default after the worst nightclub burned down.

Cummings, Boris Johnson’s former adviser, today paid tribute to Klute – where he once worked collecting money on the doorstep.

He posted on

“Not many people know that my dad and uncles gave it that name after watching the classic 70s movie, watch it if you never have (Maybe the Startup Party should buy the building from our head office in the north…).”

Klute was previously owned by Cummings’ uncle, but its ownership was taken over by Tokyo Industries in 2013.

Although the business has not issued an official notice of closure, there have been no posts on Klute’s social media since March and the club has only been open on weekends since January.

Klute first opened its doors in 1971 and became famous for its popular club night “Sunday Night Klute” and its signature drink “quaddie”.

Dillon Blevins, general manager of Klute, confirmed the nightclub’s closure to Durham’s student newspaper, The Palatinate.

He told the publication: “As a former student of Durham University since 2017, I have experienced Klute first-hand in his element.

“At no time was Klute the worst nightclub in Europe: Klute wasn’t even the worst nightclub in Durham.

“From what I saw from the front lines of the Durham party, I believe that while Klute’s closure is not solely due to changing student preferences (the club), it It’s clear that the way we spend our free time and our money has completely changed.’

Current and former Durham University students also reacted with shock to the news of Klute’s closure.

The director of think tank Onward, Sebastian Payne, said he was devastated that future students at the university would not be able to have the “Klute experience”.

He told the Mirror: “Klute was an integral part of every Durham student’s experience, for better and for worse.

“It’s everything people say: small, sweaty, smelly, lots of cheesy music and boring people.

“It was also a lot of fun and different from any other nightclub – including ending each night with the exact same combo of Summer of ’69 and That’s Amore.”

Durham student Annie Collier, who also worked at the nightclub, added: “(The staff) got on really well and it was such a fun experience working there, which makes it quite sad that everything was gone, as well as the beautiful nights we spent there when we weren’t working too.
