Dunkey’s Debut Game, ‘Animal Well,’ Is the Highest Reviewed PC Game of 2024 So Far

When YouTuber Dunkey announced that he was getting into game production with a new publishing company, most people scoffed, since content creators usually get into game creation or production, regardless. or the popularity of the creator (how is Dr. Disrespects DEADROP?). But Dunkey seems to have proven them wrong with Animal Well, the publisher’s first game that’s currently tied with another title as the highest-rated PC game of 2024.

Reviews for Animal Well are just in and it sits at 91 on Metacritic, tied with Tekken 8 for the highest score of 2024. Dunkey’s company is bigmode and was only announced a year ago. “Our number one priority is releasing some of the best games on the market,” Dunkey said in bigmode’s first video. While his fans received the news positively, the industry at large was skeptical about the sometimes controversial YouTuber’s ability to achieve this in a meaningful way. Yet here we are. A home run in the first at-bat.

Of course, Dunkey himself didn’t do it TO DO Animal Well, but rather published. Rather, Animal Well was created by a developer, Billy Basso. Basso even designed a custom engine for its release on Windows, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

The scores are incredible. Here’s what some reviewers say about Animal Well:

Simply out of this world reviews for not only Dunkey’s first published game, but also the one made by Basso as sole developer. Crazy story here.

If Dunkey can maintain this level of quality, we’ll see. I mean there are a limited number of surprisingly good indie games out there, but it’s clear that he had great sense for working with Basso to release Animal Well, and I’ll definitely take his next games released after that seriously. Great job for…both of you.
