Preview Duke (4) vs. NC State (11)

In a low-scoring effort, No. 4 Duke prevailed against No. 1 Houston, defeating the Cougars 54-51. Kyle Filipowski led with 16 points and nine rebounds while Jeremy Roach had 14 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Their two biggest stars stepped up when they needed it most. Duke shot 40.8% from the field, 35.3% from three-point range, and Houston shot just two of eight from three-point range and dealt with an injury to Jamal Shead that kept him out of action .

As for NC State, they have a three-headed monster in DJ Horne, DJ Burns Jr. and Mohamed Diarra. However, in this one, Casey Morsell replaced Burns Jr. Together, these three players had 45 of the Wolfpack’s 67 points.

They shot 46.4 percent from the field, 39.1 percent from three-point range, and Marquette was abysmal from deep, shooting just four of 31 (12.9 percent).

Duke vs. NC State analysis

According to KenPom, of the eight remaining teams in the NCAA Tournament, Duke is third in adjusted defensive efficiency, allowing 94.8 points per 100 possessions. NC State is sixth at 99.6. Offensively, NC State is scoring 114.9 points per 100 possessions, while Duke is up at 122.4.

Neither team is particularly noteworthy in terms of what they hold their opponents to from the field, but Duke has the edge from three-point range, holding the teams to 32 percent to 33.5 percent.

Duke was strained against Houston, and it’s hard to know what would have happened if Shead hadn’t been injured. Meanwhile, NC State held off a No. 2 team in Marquette.

Both teams have several players who can show up, including Filipowski, Roach, Tyrese Proctor and Jared McCain. For Duke and NC State, it’s Burns Jr., Horne, Diarra and also Morsell.

Duke vs. NC State take

NC State has been a great story so far, and they’re going to give Duke everything they can handle. They beat them not too long ago in the ACC tournament, 74-69, and in that game Diarra, Morsell, Burns Jr., Morsell and even Michae O’Connell had double-digit points.

They’ll need four of these guys to have good games, while Duke needs their guards, Proctor and Roach, to show up and play big at the same time.

Filipowski will do what he can, but he can’t do it alone.

Take the Wolfpack plus the points here. They should cover, if not upset Duke once again.
