A Duke Star Hoops player can expulsion due to a State Department decision on South Sudanese visas holders – set up just before the team lost their last heartbreaking match against Houston.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Social Networks on Saturday that he “took measures to revoke all visas held by South-Sudanese passport holders”, which would include Khaman Maluach, the first-year center of the University of Duke.
Maluach, who was born in South Sudan, concluded his first year season with the defeat of Blue Devils against Houston on Saturday evening.
Rubio said that the restriction was “due to the failure of the South Sudan transitional government to accept the return of its citizens repatriated in time”, which means that the African nation has not said that it would bring its migrants to the United States in a certain period.
Maluach refused to speak with journalists after the devastating defeat of his team on Saturday.
Duke University’s spokesman Frank Trant said that the school “examines the situation and quickly works to understand the implications for Duke students”.
A representative of the State Department told USA Today that the decision “would have an impact on all those who have an American visa in a South Sudanese passport and anyone with a South Sudanese passport which requests an American visa.
“We will provide more information and instructions to visa holders and candidates concerned as they are available,” said the representative.
