Chicago – The defensive platform of the temple of renown Steve McMichael, which was diagnosed with SLA in 2021, was transferred to palliative care on Wednesday.
“Yes, Steve is transferred to palliative care today,” said Betsy Shepherd, spokesperson for former Chicago Bears star, in response to an email questioning his status.
McMichael played in the 1985 Super Bowl Super Bowl championship team and was an All-Pro in 1985 and 1987. He was inducted at the Professional Football Temple last year. He played in a franchise record 191 consecutive games from 1981 to 1993 and ranked second behind Richard Dent on the list of bags of all time in the Bears with 92½. His last NFL season was with Green Bay in 1994.
He told Chicago Tribune in April 2021 that he was fighting with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which affects nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control.
McMichael’s wife Misty told Fox 32 Chicago that Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox had recommended that the family be transferred to palliative care. “He has not answered for two weeks and in and out of the hospital,” she said.
