MURRIETA, California — A Southern California man was arrested on New Year’s Day for driving under the influence after allegedly confusing the terms “DD” and “DUI.”
Body camera video posted to the Murrieta Police Department’s Instagram shows an officer speaking with a driver during a traffic stop. Police said the officer saw the driver swerve onto the roadway.
When asked where he was from, the driver said he was “drunk tonight.”
“I was just dropping my friend off because I’m drunk tonight,” he said.
“Are you the one who’s drunk tonight?” » asked the officer.
“Yes sir,” the driver replied.
“Do you mean ‘the DD?'” the officer said.
DD stands for designated driver, which is someone who doesn’t drink and makes sure everyone gets home safely.
Police said after admitting to consuming alcohol, the driver underwent several standardized field sobriety tests.
The driver struggled to maintain his balance and nearly fell several times, police said. He was eventually arrested for drunk driving and taken to jail.
“The Murrieta Police Department currently employs two officers who specialize in drunk driving investigations and who receive additional training to detect and investigate impaired drivers,” police said in a statement on Instagram. “In addition, the MPD Traffic Bureau regularly conducts saturation patrols and driver’s license checkpoints to further deter drunk driving.”
Police also issued a reminder that if you plan to drink, do so responsibly.
