Drone carrying drugs lands in front of Virginia school

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, Virginia – A drone carrying drugs to a correctional facility in Virginia missed its mark and landed outside a school, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

The drone was carrying a package containing marijuana, tobacco, cell phones and a USB-C to Lightning converter, investigators shared.

Sheriff’s assistants were called to Brunswick Academy in Lawrenceville around 8:24 am Monday when school employees reported “a suspicious package” outside the school.

“During our investigation, it was determined that this package had been abandoned around 5:40 a.m. due to the witness seeing a drone during this time land on the ground,” the Brunswick County Sheriff wrote, Brian Roberts, in an email. “Shortly after, the witness saw a small dark colored sedan enter the school parking lot and grab the drone.”

People in the car left the package behind, investigators said.

“Based on our investigation, it is clearly evident that the package was to be dropped off on the adjacent property of the Lawrenceville Correctional Center, which is operated by a private company called The GEO Group,” added Roberts. “We have had numerous calls for service at the prison this year to include other sightings of drones alleging the same criminal activity.”

Sheriff Roberts said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information has been asked to call 434-848-2336.
