Driver passed out before fatal crash near Lefthand Canyon, police say

A man fell asleep at the wheel before the rollover that killed him and the mother of his two children while the family was driving near Lefthand Canyon on New Year’s Day, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Joshua and Christina Gilson, both 43, resided in Castle Rock and were identified Friday by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office. Their children, aged 11 and 16, were present and injured in the accident. The family dog ​​was also injured and had to be euthanized.

The Colorado State Patrol also said in a news release that Christina Gilson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Investigators say the Gilsons’ vehicle was heading north on U.S. 36 near Lefthand Canyon Drive when it crossed the median, rolled and came to rest on the opposite side of the highway .
