Driver killed after car crashes into South Los Angeles church

A driver was killed and his passenger injured after his SUV crashed into a South Los Angeles church, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly after midnight Saturday morning, as the driver – a man in his 40s – was heading west on Manchester Avenue, according to Norma Eisenman, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Angeles.

The vehicle struck a light pole and then the building, causing the driver to be ejected, Eisenman said. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his injured passenger was taken to hospital, she said.

The collision caused significant damage to Challenge of Faith of God in Christ Church in Manchester, just west of Central Avenue.

David Jessie, the church’s associate pastor, told KTLA-TV that cars have crashed into the church before — a situation he attributed to dangerous road conditions in Manchester. Church leaders have already asked city leaders to do something about a hollow in the road nearby, he said.

“We’ve been through this time and time again,” he told the station.

After seeing the damage, the church was given a yellow tag by building inspectors, according to KTLA.
