The schools remained closed and additional flights were planned to help people leave the Greek island of Santorini on Monday while dozens of tremors shook the popular holiday destination for a fourth day.
Tremblies have been recorded between the volcanic islands of Santorini and Amorgos in the Aegean Sea since Friday, forcing the authorities to close the Santorini schools and the neighboring islands of iOS, Amorgos and AAFI.
Earthquakes, some with a magnitude greater than 4 years, shaken Santorini every few minutes on Monday while people were informed to stay outside of interior spaces and small ports. Disaster response units have been deployed on the ground as a precaution.
Experts have said that seismic activity on the island, some of which are perched on steep cliffs, will continue for weeks.
“We estimate it (activity) will continue for a few days and there could be a long seismic sequence,” said Efthymios Lekkas, professor of tectonic geology and disaster management, and part of a team of Experts evaluating the situation on the ground, said Greek television.
Local officials said permanent residents were not particularly worried because they had been used to earthquakes, but some who were on the island for work moved.
Aegean Airlines said it would operate three additional flights to and from Santorini on Monday and Tuesday to facilitate the trip of residents and visitors to the request of the Ministry of Civil Protection of Greece.
Greece is on several lines of fault and is often shaken by earthquakes.
One of the greatest volcanic eruptions in history, around 1600 BC, formed Santorini in its current form. The last eruption in the region occurred in 1950.
Experts have said that a slight volcanic activity also recorded near Santorini in recent days has not been linked to earthquakes.
