Dozens arrested in protests reappear, UCLA returns to ‘limited operations’ and virtual classes – Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES — UCLA returned to “limited operations” and online classes on Monday, May 6, after protests resurfaced on campus.

“Limited operations today 5/6. All classes will be moved remotely today due to continued disruptions,” an alert said shortly after 10 a.m.

Police arrested several people gathered in a campus parking lot, according to law enforcement. An apparent “sit-in” inside Moore Hall also disrupted classes, officials said.

UCLA officials have vowed to resume normal operations on campus after a week of unrest over a now-dismantled pro-Palestinian encampment.

But it quickly became clear Monday morning that normality was not there.

Several dozen people gathered on the upper level of a campus parking lot early Monday morning. It is unclear what the group was doing or whether it was specifically protesting academic ties to Israel.

According to reports at the scene, up to 40 people were arrested by police in the garage, allegedly because they refused to give their names or even say whether they were students.

Meanwhile, about 50 people gathered around 7 a.m. inside Moore Hall on campus, apparently staging a sit-in protest. The nature of the protest was not immediately clear.

KCAL9 reported that the crowd had dispersed from the building around 9 a.m., but reports of other unauthorized gatherings began to materialize in other buildings.

This action came a day after Chancellor Gene Block announced the creation of a campus security office to administer policing and emergency management in the wake of campus unrest following pro-protests. -Palestinians.
