The Peninsula’s natural evening charms are one reason Door County was ranked the best place for nightlife in Wisconsin, and 25th nationally, in a recent national survey.

That’s according to a new survey that ranks Door County not only as the 25th best place for night owls in the United States, but also the best in Wisconsin. Yes, ahead of Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward, ranked 73rd nationally, and Madison’s State Street, 95th.

The survey was commissioned by Mixbook, a California-based manufacturer and producer of personalized photo books, photo cards, calendars and other keepsakes. It surveyed 3,000 adult “seasoned travelers,” as Mixbook describes it, to find the top 150 places for nightlife in the country, and Door County, the Third Ward and State Street were the only places in Wisconsin to make the list. the list.

It may seem strange that a vacation spot known more as a place to escape the noise of the big city and enjoy natural beauty and tranquil surroundings ranks so high on such a list, while “nightlife” is generally considered synonymous with restlessness. , bright lights, crowds, clubs, sounds, cultures and action 24 hours a day. Downtown Las Vegas and the legendary French Quarter of New Orleans ranked first and second in the survey and the SoHo neighborhood in Manhattan, for example, ranked fourth.

But that beauty and tranquility is one of the reasons Door County is so high on the list.

“While known for its scenic beauty by day, Door County also offers tranquil evening experiences with local wineries and waterfront restaurants that provide a serene setting for nightlife in the middle of natural landscape,” said a press release announcing the results.

Julie Gilbert, president and CEO of Destination Door County, agreed with these factors while noting several others that offer a different experience from almost every other nightclub on the list.

“Door County nightlife experiences reflect our laid-back, relaxing vibe, offering a variety of traditional options like live music, lively pubs and local beers or craft cocktails with friends,” Gilbert said. “Many are also drawn to our live theater, stunning sunsets, drive-in movies or spending time under the stars at Newport State Park, our certified Dark Sky Park.

Door County found itself in some heady company with its No. 25 spot on the list. Not far from the rankings were the River Arts District in Asheville, North Carolina, at No. 20; San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, 21st; The Loop, downtown Chicago, 22nd; and another historic French Quarter, this one on the cobblestone streets of Charleston, South Carolina, in the 23rd.

And behind the peninsula in the ranking are other well-known and very popular nightlife spots, enjoying a national and international reputation. These included Seattle’s Pike Place Market, at 26th place; Greenwich Village, 30th, and Harlem, 63rd, in Manhattan; Beacon Hill in Boston, 51st; Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota, 61st; the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, 78th; the casinos and history of Deadwood, South Dakota in the 79th; and Old Town in the Alexandria, Virginia, suburb of 85th in Washington, DC.

Meanwhile, the survey cites Milwaukee’s Third Ward as “a vibrant arts and fashion district at night, with chic lounges, theater performances and the bustling Milwaukee Public Market, making it a top destination for nightlife enthusiasts.

State Street has been described as “a vibrant nightlife corridor in Madison, connecting the University of Wisconsin to the State Capitol.” The area is lively with bars, music venues and restaurants that cater to both students and locals.”

The Top 10, after Vegas and the French Quarter, are Kailua-Kona on the “Big Island” of Hawaii; SoHo; downtown Anchorage, Alaska; the historic district of Savannah, Georgia; Old Colorado Town in Colorado Springs; downtown Nashville; the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas; and the Waikiki neighborhood of Honolulu.
