Don’t judge Islanders’ Patrick Roy until 2024-25 season

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Here’s a fact I’m not sure what to make of: The Islanders had a better points percentage under Lane Lambert this season than under Patrick Roy.

There are many reservations about this on both sides.

The team’s underlying numbers at five-on-five are better across the board under Roy, but their special teams have been worse. Lambert had even more injuries to deal with. Roy became less good as a goaltender and played a slightly higher percentage of games on the road.

And whatever the outcome, it was clear by the end of Lambert’s tenure that the Islanders were no longer playing for him. This is therefore not an attempt to call into question the decision to dismiss him.
