Doncaster disdaining tells the Scottish fans that they don’t really know what they want … but the group of supporters strikes “personal interest” and the lack of SPFL engagement on reconstruction

One of the groups of the most eminent supporters of Scottish football accused the SPFL of ignorance and personal interest around the subject of the reconstruction of the League.

The problem has been back on the table in recent weeks, the SPFL competition group currently weighing all the available options.

The results of their report should be sent to clubs this week, with a flight of 10 reduced teams defended by some as the best option.

For any reconstruction to be given to the green light, 11 of the 12 high -flying clubs would have to give their blessing.

He would also need 75% of all the Premiership and Combined Championship clubs, as well as 75% support of the 42 SPFL clubs in the general classification.

In an interview with Nutmeg magazine, the director general of SPFL, Neil Doncaster, said that fans did not really know what they wanted.

Doncaster said: “ one of the problems we have in this debate is that what fans say they want is not the same as what fans will pay for a ticket to go.

“What we know about more important participations are tense, competitive, significant, exciting and dramatic matches where there is something to play.

“You get those who have smaller leagues, not larger leagues. So the more the league you have, the more it creates meaningless matches.

“We had very large leagues in this country. No recent memory, but if you talk to people who have the memory of these moments, they will tell you that at the end of the season, there was absolutely nothing to play. You know, many median and mediocre matches.

“Listen, the reality is that there is no perfect format. The only truism is that people always believe that whatever you have at any time, there is something better there.

“What is in reality is a series of compromises that give you the best possible format at any time.”

But Doncaster’s comments were given by a short circuit by the director general of the Scottish Football Supporters’ Association.

In a spicy reprimand, Stuart Murphy criticized the significant lack of engagement with fans on any reconstruction of the proposed league.

“The thorny subject of the reconstruction of the league has never really been out of the table since the last reconstruction and continues to rage,” Murphy told Mail Sport.

“The SFSA understands that discussions are currently underway within the SPFL by examining the change options, but, disappointing, the representation of the fans is visible by its absence.

“Why an organization or a company would plan to modify their product or service offer without consulting its customers makes no sense for us as an organization.

“Scottish football fans ensure that the SPFL is the best sustained (per capita) in Europe, so we therefore deserve and have the right to a voice in these deliberations?

“Consistently, our research shows that massively supporters find the current system to play four times commonplace.

“Further in the leagues, there must be more incentives for clubs to progress and the current system does not allow it.

“This is the case for some time now. Change has been expected for a long time. But self-interest will undoubtedly prevail, the 11-1 voting system being the mechanism which prevents a significant change.

“The SFSA will however continue to put pressure on the football authorities and work together for changes as detailed in” rebuilding Scottish Football – an article on the game in Scotland “.
