Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, January 20, could spell a world of trouble for Prince Harry, as one of the president-elect’s colleagues isn’t a big fan of the royal family. Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom and Bernard and Barbara Lomas Fellow of the Heritage Foundation – the Project 2025 think tank – is stepping up efforts to revoke the Duke of Sussex’s US visa.
Gardiner was upset by Harry and Meghan Markle’s press release on their site Sussex.com regarding Meta’s decision to eliminate third-party fact-checking. Donald Trump ally said The daily beast that he considers their opinion on Mark Zuckerberg’s company a “deeply political issue” and that it is “extremely inappropriate” for the royal couple to speak out on this “hot political issue”.

“For members of the royal family to engage in such overtly political matters is, frankly, entirely inappropriate,” Gardiner said. “This goes against royal protocol. Using these titles to promote their personal and political agendas makes a mockery of the royal family’s usual neutrality. Their statement was not a mild call for dialogue or understanding; it was a real political diatribe.
Yet Harry and Meghan’s statement begins by saying that this is a problem for everyone – not just the left, right or center. “It doesn’t matter if your views are left, right, or somewhere in between: Meta’s latest news about changes to their policies directly undermines free speech,” they wrote. “This should concern us all deeply. Contrary to the company’s arguments, allowing more abuse and normalizing hate speech serves to silence speech and expression, not enable it.”
Gardiner has been pushing for Harry’s deportation for years and he could have the support of Donald Trump if he gets what he wants. Harry admitted to his drug use in his 2023 memoir, Sparewas the source of the Heritage Foundation’s concerns. They sued the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claiming Harry received special treatment as a royal when he was granted the visa. John Bardo, who represented DHS in court, had no problem with Harry’s book. He said at a hearing in February 2024, according to The telegraph“The book is not testimony or sworn evidence, saying something in a book does not necessarily make it true.”
With the arrival of a new president, Prince Harry’s luck could change. It’s difficult to understand why the Heritage Foundation is so focused on Harry’s immigration status, especially when the United States is facing more pressing problems.
