Donald Trump prices: how could they affect sport?

In the midst of a trade war, Trump’s prices also raised questions about the atmosphere during the various sporting events that it is due to the reception, including the Ryder Cup in the United States later this year.

With the leaders of the European Union who were very critical of politics, it would be not surprising that anti-European feeling among American fans was intensified.

And then there is the 2026 World Cup, which the United States co-hosted alongside Mexico and Canada.

In January, Trump promised to impose prices of 25% on imports from neighboring countries – the two largest American trade partners – in a decision which, according to him, was designed to combat the entry of opioid drug fentanyl in the United States, the large quantities of undocumented migrants that have met with American borders, as well as trade deficits.

Last month, Trump said the political and economic tensions between the United States and its World Cup co-animators would be good for the tournament. “I think it will make it more exciting. Tension is a good thing,” he said.

He also announced the training of a World Cup working group,, external that he will preside to make sure that the tournament is going well. FIFA was approached to comment on their response to the American President’s prices.

But Trump’s protectionist policies raise serious questions about the will and ability of the three countries to work together on security for example, or to ensure that fans can obtain entry visas, then easily pass through borders.

With imported materials such as more expensive steel and aluminum, there may also be concerns about the development of infrastructure for the tournament.

Trump also provocatively talked about Canada “the 51st state”, leading to the American anthem which is hooked by NBA Canadian fans and NHL matches.

Could additional tensions on prices mean that such scenes are repeated during the World Cup or even at the Olympic Games?

“Nations and cities are organizing global sporting events for various reasons, improving the reputation and conducting global investments, sending a message to the world that you are open, welcoming and ready to do business. It seems that nothing could be further from the truth in terms of Trump America,” said Zerafa.

“These are not only the prices. Forced repatriations, and hostility to the EU and NATO, to a possible control of Greenland and bad blood with Canada. All this makes it a very difficult backdrop for the 2026 World Cup games and in 2028 to promote this story.”

The IOC was approached for comments. The initiates told BBC Sport that they are convinced that Trump’s love for sport – and his desire for the 2028 to be a successful world platform towards the end of his second mandate – will ensure that the preparations for the Olympic Games are not derailed by geopolitics.
