Donald Trump launches last-minute attempt to delay secret trial in New York

A week before his trial, former President Donald Trump launched a last-minute attempt Monday to delay his criminal trial in New York, move the case out of Manhattan and ease restrictions on his speech.

A New York Appellate Division judge will hear oral arguments Monday on Trump’s challenge to the venue of his criminal case in New York and the recently expanded silence order, which now covers the judge’s family and that of the prosecutor.

The trial is scheduled to begin April 15.

The limited gag order now covers family members of District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Judge Juan Merchan, after Trump repeatedly targeted Merchan’s daughter on social media over her work with a group involved in Democratic politics.

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records after being indicted by a Manhattan grand jury in connection with a hush money payment his then-lawyer Michael Cohen made to the star Stormy Daniels porn just days before the 2016 presidential election.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty last April.
