DOE cancels $ 3.7 billion in carbon capture, decarbonization awards

The American Department of Energy Friday Canceled 3.7 billion dollars in awards From its office of clean energy demonstrations, including $ 540 million in grants for two carbon capture projects provided by Calpine.

The canceled awards were mainly for the capture and sequestration of carbon and other decarbonization projects, according to Doe. The companies concerned include PPL Corp., Ørsted and Exxon Mobil Corp.

Calpine projects are intended for CCS projects with its gas gas of 550 MW Sutter power plant in Yuba City, California, and its 810 MW Baytown Power Plant In Baytown, Texas.

“After an in -depth and individualized financial examination of each price, the DOE noted that these projects had not advanced the energy needs of the American people, were not economically viable and would not generate a positive return on the investment of the dollars of taxpayers,” said Doe.

Sixteen of the 24 dismissed prices were signed between the election of President Donald Trump in November and January 20, according to Doe.

The DOE evaluated the prices canceled under An examination process described earlier this month. The ministry said it was examining 179 prizes that total more than $ 15 billion in financial aid.

“The DOE favors large -scale commercial projects that require more detailed information for the winners for the initial phase of this review, but this process can extend to other offices of the DoE program as the opinions are growing,” said the ministry.

Doe created the Office of Clean Energy Developments at the end of 2021 to manage around 27 billion dollars of financing appropriate by the law on investment and infrastructure jobs and the inflation reduction law, according to A mid-November report of the US government’s responsibility office.

You will find below a list of DOE of canceled prices announced on Friday.

Permission granted by the US Energy Ministry

Doe’s decision to end prices was “short -sighted”, according to Steven Nadel, Executive Director of the US Council for an energy -efficient economy. “Locking domestic plants in obsolete technology is not a recipe for future competitiveness or bringing manufacturing jobs to American communities,” Nadel said in a statement.
