Los Angeles Dodgers cleanup hitter Teoscar Hernandez likely will be placed on the injured list after being hit in the left foot by a pitch during Friday night’s 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, manager Dave Roberts said.
The Dodgers said Hernandez suffered a contusion in his left foot, and Roberts added the injury was “not terrible.”
After taking a 80 mph (130 km/h) sliding pitch to the leg from left-hander Matthew Boyd, Hernandez was treated at home plate by the Dodgers’ training staff before electing to take first base. He left the field before Boyd threw his next pitch and was replaced at first base by Chris Taylor.
In his first season with the Dodgers, Hernandez batted .266 with 28 home runs and 87 RBIs. He won the Home Run Derby in July during the All-Star Game festivities in Arlington, Texas.
The Dodgers have been dealing with injuries, with right-hander Gavin Stone being placed on the disabled list earlier Friday. Mookie Betts returned a month ago from a broken hand and Freddie Freeman is coming off a broken finger. Max Muncy spent three months on the disabled list with an oblique strain. Pitchers Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are still out.
In nine major league seasons, Hernandez has posted a .262 batting average with 187 home runs and 560 RBIs in 949 games with the Houston Astros (2016-17), Toronto Blue Jays (2017-22), Seattle Mariners (2023) and Dodgers.
