Dodgers get good news – no fractures in Teoscar Hernandez’s foot – Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES — Teoscar Hernandez underwent an MRI and CT scan of his injured left foot Saturday. The results revealed something unexpected for the Dodgers: good news.

No fractures were found during the examination and Hernandez is not expected to be placed on injured reserve.

“The MRI and CT scan were negative – thank God, nothing broken,” Hernandez said. “Just take today, do some activity tomorrow and see how it goes. Maybe Monday or Tuesday, back on the field.”

“Thank God I won’t have to go (on the injured list) and I’ll be able to come back in a few days.”

Hernandez was hit in the left foot near the ankle by a pitch in the first inning of Friday’s game. The pain was severe enough that Hernandez feared the worst.

“I honestly thought it was worse when I got hit,” he said Saturday. “After a few hours, it feels like the pain doesn’t go away. … But thank God, there’s nothing to worry about.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has heard enough bad injury news this year to brace for more with Hernandez and was “very relieved” when Saturday’s test results came back.

“Obviously if it was a fracture it probably would have been season-ending for him and it would have been a huge loss,” Roberts said. “But with the images we’ve received, the information we’ve received, we’re happy with the day-to-day situation and he’ll be back early next week. So hopefully it continues to get better and better every day.”

Signed to a one-year free agent deal last winter, Hernandez is second on the team in home runs (28) and RBIs (87) with an .819 OPS (fourth on the team behind Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman). His offensive production has been crucial with Max Muncy out for three months with a rib injury and Will Smith having his worst offensive season.

Andy Pages started in place of Hernandez on Saturday, but Roberts said he hasn’t decided whether that playing time will go to Pages, Chris Taylor or Kike Hernandez until Teoscar Hernandez returns.

GLASNOW PEN

Right-hander Tyler Glasnow threw about 20 pitches (all fastballs) in a workout Saturday afternoon. It was the first time Glasnow has thrown from a mound since being placed on the injured list with elbow tendinitis three weeks ago.

“The bullpen went really well,” Roberts said. “I came out of it pretty excited.”

Glasnow will throw another bullpen session Tuesday, using his full mix of pitches. The Dodgers will then decide whether he will pitch to hitters in a simulated game setting or rejoin the rotation.

Regardless, Glasnow will likely be limited when he returns to the rotation — as will right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto when he starts Tuesday. Yamamoto made two rehab starts with Triple-A Oklahoma City but pitched just two innings.

“Just looking at the schedule, there’s only a few opportunities, so we could be in a situation where we only have three or four innings left,” Roberts said of Glasnow’s limitations upon his return. “But you kind of have to take what you can get at this point, if he’s healthy, and try to go from there.”

Having two pitchers in the rotation – Glasnow and Yamamoto – limited to three (maybe four) innings means the Dodgers will once again be asking their bullpen to step up and cover more innings.

“It’ll be tough,” Roberts said of the potential bullpen slowdown. “But honestly, it’s nothing we haven’t done this year. If it does, we’ll figure it out.”

RETURN OF GRATEROL

Right-hander Brusdar Graterol finished his rehab with Triple-A Oklahoma City by pitching a scoreless inning Friday. Roberts said Graterol will be activated from the disabled list Sunday or Monday depending on the Dodgers’ bullpen usage this weekend.

Graterol missed most of the season with a shoulder injury. He returned to the field for the Dodgers on Aug. 6, but left the field after nine pitches with a hamstring injury. He made two appearances for OKC this week.
