Waking up in front of your alarm rings could be a sign that you suffer from a debilitating hormonal condition that can cause fatal heart problems, an expert warned.

A hyperactive thyroid, also known as hyperthyroidism, affects approximately one in 100 and means that the body produces too much a collection of hormones that make us alert.

According to the specialist in hormonal disorders Dr. Gaurav Agarwal, early awakenings are often the first sign of the condition, because excessive hormones stimulate the nervous system in the early hours.

When not treated, the condition can cause a multitude of unpleasant symptoms such as fine hair, dry eyes, swelling of the neck, anxiety and involuntary weight loss.

But most concerning the complications that change life as a weakening of irregular bones and rhythms that could lead to fatal heart failure.

The condition is “relatively common in the United Kingdom,” said Dr Agarwal, but many are missing the first signs.
