Do you play JK Rowling’s detective in Strike? My integrity goes well with that, says Tom Burke

Tom Burke shared his feelings about starring in Strikethe BBC’s hit adaptation of the detective novels written by JK Rowling.

The 42-year-old actor has played one-legged private detective Cormoran Strike since 2017 and reprises the role for its sixth season, which began filming in February.

Speaking in an interview with The independentBurke discussed her thoughts on her connection to one of the most polarizing figures of the era, Rowling, who has faced strong backlash in recent years due to her outspoken stance on trans women.

He said: “I’ve thought a lot about these things and I feel good doing this particular job (playing in Strike), and my integrity goes well with that. I know this is a complex question.

Burke also revealed that before the interview he made a special request to the BBC for media training on how to talk about the Harry Potter author. “I’ll start by saying that what I hope for this situation is that it gets better,” he said.

“I want these disparate groups to find a solution. I don’t want to say anything in the wrong context, or at the wrong time, that’s going to make the situation worse, because that’s not nice, right? There is so much antipathy.

He added: “I hate this term ‘culture war.’ Maybe it’s naive of me to say this, but I want no part of it. I want to bring people together.

When asked what he thought about the fact that Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson had both condemned Rowling’s anti-trans views, Burke replied: “It’s not mine to question someone’s integrity when they speak out. My integrity is not to do it. My integrity is to walk away. I’m aware that this might mean people think I’m on the fence; It’s just what works for me right now.

“I’m not saying I’ll never speak; It’s not that I’m not part of it. It’s just that I want to say something that is helpful to the resolution.

As for whether he has any sympathy for Radcliffe, who has been targeted by anti-trans activists, he said: “Frankly, I feel sorry for anyone who is facing any form of anger. It’s just the way I’m wired.

Rowling, who initially faced backlash from several key cast members when she shared controversial remarks about the trans community in 2020, saw her relationship with the stars deteriorate amid an increasingly toxic debate.

After the release of the Cass report in April, an independent review into gender identity services for children, Rowling lashed out at Radcliffe and Watson, telling them to “save their excuses” for “traumatized detransitioners.”

The author has also long been a critic of the Scottish Government’s gender reform plans, arguing that the proposals undermine women’s safety.

She has denied being transphobic, but has previously said she would rather go to jail than refer to a trans person by their preferred pronouns.

Elsewhere in the interview, Burke spoke about his new film: Furiosa: A Mad Max sagahis roles in films man And Memoryand being the non-stereotypical leader.
