Disney layoffs go global as 2,500 more U.S. workers axed this week

The Walt Disney Co. has reportedly started laying off staff overseas as it continues to cut jobs at home, with 2,500 more American workers receiving pink slips this week.

Disney began notifying about 100 foreign workers this week that their jobs were at risk of being cut, according to a report by Deadline. Staff are based in London and throughout EMEA, ie Europe, Middle East and Africa. The number of workers affected should be proportional to the number of layoffs in the United States.

CEO Bob Iger instituted a brutal series of mass layoffs earlier this year that will see a total of 7,000 Disney employees lose their jobs. The layoffs come as Disney struggles with a profitability crisis brought on by a weak economy under President Joe Biden as well as poor decisions made by former CEO Bob Chapek, who was fired in December following a report by disastrous results.

Iger is seeking to cut spending by $5.5 billion in an attempt to save the once formidable company.

This week, an additional 2,500 Disney employees in the United States lost their jobs, according to multiple reports. It represents the latest round of nationwide layoffs after two previous rounds, the first of which began in March.

Like other Hollywood legacy studios, Disney is spending a fortune on streaming entertainment in an effort to compete with Netflix and capture younger generations of consumers. At the same time, studios are facing a dramatic drop in ad revenue as households rocked by bideninflation continue to cut spending.

Cord-cutting also continues to weigh on studio profitability.

Despite its significant financial challenges, Disney continues to pursue a woke policy that is alienating millions of its customers.

The studio recently sued the governor of Florida.
