Disgraced cop killer gets job with New York police union

A disgraced former NYPD cop, forced to resign after fatally shooting an elderly schizophrenic woman in the Bronx, has found a new job working for one of the city’s police unions, The Post has learned.

Hugh Barry, who was tried and acquitted of murder and manslaughter for the killing of 66-year-old Deborah Danner in 2016, is described on the Sergeants Benevolent Association of the NYPD website as a reimbursement coordinator.

Barry was forced to resign in 2023 following an internal review into the fatal incident, which found he “displayed poor tactical judgement”.

Danner was 66 years old when she was fatally shot by Barry.

His actions at work cost the city $2 million, after settling a wrongful death lawsuit brought by Danner’s twin sister, Jennifer, who declined to comment.

It’s unclear what Barry’s new job entails, or when he started working for the SBA, which did not respond to The Post’s numerous requests for comment.

Barry did not return calls.

In October 2016, Barry was dispatched to Danner’s Castle Hill apartment after 911 received calls that the mentally ill woman was acting erratically.

Danner, a writer who shared her experiences with mental illness, was shot and killed after picking up a baseball bat.

Barry, an NYPD sergeant at the time, claimed he fired in self-defense.

In 2017, Barry was arrested for shooting Danner, becoming the first serving police officer to face a murder case since 1999.

Barry found a new job as reimbursement coordinator for the Sergeants Benevolent Association, according to the union’s website. sbanypd.nyc

A judge acquitted the eight-year NYPD veteran in 2018.
