‘Diablo 4’ Season 4 Is The Most Diablo Addict I’ve Been In A Decade

I’ve been really addicted to very few games in my life. You could say one of them is a constant, low-level addiction to keeping up with Destiny 1 and 2, but that doesn’t usually involve mindless late-night work sessions, even though I’m still its new content.

Two other games? Diablo 2 and 3 at different points in my life, the last being the release of Reaper of Souls almost exactly 10 years ago in March 2014. But Diablo 4 never got to that point at or near launch. This has now changed.

The changes made to Diablo 4 in Season 4, primarily to gear, but also to levels and endgame quests, have shaped something that yes, I am now completely addicted to, at least for the moment. The process they have in place here is simply excellent at transporting players from goal to goal, getting stronger and stronger in the process. Here’s how it happens:

  • Low-level progress – It’s almost the same as it’s always been, and getting through those first dozen levels and three world tiers still isn’t much fun, but with the XP gains and the enemy-dense Helltides, it’s much better now.
  • Paragon Maxing – Then your goal becomes to reach level 100 and get all your points on the board for maximum building strategy outside of your gear.
  • Maximizing Glyphs – Next, you head into the Nightmare dungeons to make sure all the glyphs on your board are at max level in order to increase your power as much as possible.
  • Legendary/Unique Farming – Along the way you of course pick up the legendary and unique aspects you want for your build, but that’s just the beginning.
  • Tempering – This attaches two new affixes to all your legendary gear so you have even greater customization. A bad RNG can cause you to “miss” what you want, and then have to start again with a new piece, but it’s still better than before.

  • Greater Affix Farming – Now you can find gear with 1, 2, 3, or even 4 higher affixes that drop to 150% of their stat value. So you might have a piece that you like, but what would better? One with 150% values in multiple locations, of course. So you end up trying to replace all your existing legendary gear with this.
  • Master work – Once you have the equipment you want, you progress through 12 levels of upgrades to increase all stat values by 5% at each level, sometimes with random increases of 25% every four levels. This requires farming increasingly difficult levels of The Pit, a new Greater Rift-style activity that rewards these materials, and it takes a long time to get a fully mastered set.
  • Material agriculture – You will have to perform basically everything that is not the pit to farm things like gold or Uber Boss materials, and even gems now require a lot more investment than before to max out, so you’ll need those material shards as well.
  • Uber Bosses – Traditional farming for targeted drops, Ubers with Duriel and Andariel, but it is now possible to summon level 200 boss versions with better drops and some of the hardest challenges in the game.

It’s hard to fully explain how well this all fits together, but it really does. The old list would have mostly stopped at “legendary and unique farming” and almost everything after that is brand new and takes you much further into the endgame than you’ve ever been before. They’ve really “cooked” here, as they say, and I’m deep into this season in a place I’ve never been before.
