Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia thrown into late chaos as Garcia comes in way overweight and loses $1.5million bet

Ryan Garcia is 3.2 pounds overweight for his fight against Devin Haney on Saturday night.

Rival American boxing stars are set to clash in New York for Haney’s WBC super-lightweight world title, live on talkSPORT, but the belt will now no longer be on the line for the challenger to win.

Haney successfully made the super lightweight limit of 140 pounds during the commission’s official weigh-in, which took place behind closed doors on Friday.

However, Garcia did not do so.

Instead, he was 3.2 pounds over the limit of 143.2 pounds.

Usually, when a fighter is slightly overweight, the commission grants him additional time to meet the agreed-upon limit.

However, the New York Commission refused this opportunity for Garcia because he weighed so far over 140 pounds.

This briefly plunged the fight into late chaos, with both sides having to negotiate a deal to allow it to proceed as a non-title fight, which they have now managed to do.

Garcia will not be able to win Haney’s WBC super lightweight world title and, according to Haney, will pay him $1.5 million for missing weight by three pounds, as they had bet at the conference in Thursday press.

During the press conference, the subject of weight gain was widely discussed.

Some fans took to social media and shared their opinion that Haney looked exhausted.

However, on stage, it was the champions’ camp that expressed concerns over whether Garcia would actually make the 140-pound limit.

The challenger responded to this by saying he would happily bet $500,000 that he would make weight.

Haney responded by challenging Garcia to pay him $500,000 per book over the limit.

Garcia agreed without hesitation and the two men shook hands.

Now he has agreed to pay Haney $1,500,000.

Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia will be live on talkSPORT starting at 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
