Detroit Lions Week 1 OTA Participation, Injury Report: Who Practiced, Who Didn’t

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell opened his press conference by listing 17 players who were going to be limited or absent from Thursday’s practice, either due to injury or personal reasons. . Here is that list:

However, Campbell did not give any details on which players were out, which ones were sidelined and which ones were limited. We were present at Thursday’s practice and took part in our own personal injury report. It should be noted that at this point in the offseason there is no official injury report, so this is purely my own report.

I didn’t see it in training

Names in bold refer to players not named by Campbell above

RB Jahmyr Gibbs
TE Sam LaPorta
OT Taylor Decker
C Frank Ragnow
G Kayode Awosika
EDGE Marcus Davenport
EDGE Josh Paschal
EDGE James Houston
DT DJ player
LB Alex Anzalone

It’s unclear why Josh Paschal and James Houston weren’t in practice Thursday, but it gave more opportunities to guys like Mathieu Betts, John Cominsky and Chris Smith.

In training, I don’t do anything

Branch DB Brian

Branch was an observer at Thursday’s practice. He was still wearing a boot and a scooter, but Campbell said the “clean-up” operation he did in the offseason was done in time for them to expect him to be ready before training camp.

In practice, limited

QB Nate Sudfeld
Knight Zonovan RB
LB Derrick Barnes
CB Emmanuel Moseley
CB Terrion Arnold
CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
S Kerby Joseph

Each of these players requires a little more explanation.

QB Nate Sudfeld – Doesn’t seem too limited, as he participated as QB3 during 7-on-7 drills, but was kept out of 11-on-11 drills.

Knight Zonovan RB – Participation in guided tours and individual exercises. I didn’t see him during team drills.

LB Derrick Barnes – Participation in guided tours and individual exercises. I didn’t see a ton of teamwork from him. It was mostly Jack Campbell and Malcolm Rodriguez with the first team.

CB Emmanuel Moseley – Participated in guided tours without a helmet, but did not participate in the rest of the practice.

CB Terrion Arnold – Participation in guided tours and some individual exercises, but no team exercises. The first-team outside cornerbacks were primarily Carlton Davis and Kindle Vildor.

CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr. – Participation in guided tours and some individual exercises, but no team exercises. The first-team nickel cornerback was Amik Robertson.

S Kerby Joseph – Was in uniform, but didn’t really participate in training. During walk-throughs, he was on the field as a consultant to the other defensive backs. For the rest of the workout, he rehabbed pretty aggressively, working at a pretty good pace.

The Lions have the holiday weekend off and will return to practice for Week 2 of OTAs on Wednesday, May 29.
