An inmate from the Correctional Center of Richard J. Donovan near Otay Mesa would have attacked an officer with an “improvised weapon” on Sunday evening, said officials of the State correctional services.
Nelson Barrera, who has been incarcerated since 2011 for second degree murder and intentionally discharges a firearm, causing injuries or death, used the weapon to stab an officer on several occasions, said the Department of Correctional Services and California’s rehabilitation in a press release.
The weapon struck the officer’s protective vest and the officer left the area and called for help. The officer was dealt with in the establishment and returned to his home.
Barrera was locked in his cell after the staff members responded, leading to a dead end during which Barre will refused to drop his weapon.
Barrera “hit a safety window and injured his arms and hands” before handing two improvised weapons to the staff “without strength”, said CDCR.
Barrera was transferred to another establishment and the incident remains under investigation.
