Demi Moore beats transgender frontrunner in tight Golden Globes best actress race

In one of the biggest surprises of the night, Demi Moore beat a transgender man Emilie Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón and Wicked star Cynthia Erivo to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.

Demi Moore won for her performance in The bottoma bloody horror film about Hollywood conceit that is neither a comedy nor a musical. Still, her comeback performance electrified audiences and critics, with her victory Sunday boosting her chances of securing her first Oscar nomination later this week.

Transgender Emilie Pérez Star Karla Sofía Gascón was expected to win for playing a Mexican drug lord who undergoes sex reassignment surgery. Gascón is a biological man who became a “woman” when he was in his forties.

The film produced in French, mainly in Spanish, distributed by Netflix in the United States, won the Golden Globe Award for film in a language other than English earlier in the evening.

The bottom is also produced in France and distributed by the arthouse label Mubi.

Demi Moore’s acceptance speech drew enthusiastic applause from the celebrity crowd, with the actress noting that it was the first award she has received in a career that has spanned over of four decades.
