Dem Sen. Murphy calls for national gun law to hold parents “accountable”

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” called for a national safe storage law in response to James and Jennifer Crumbley accused of manslaughter after their son Ethan Crumbley , 15, has been charged with terrorism and murder in the school shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan.

Anchor Jake Tapper said, “The Michigan attorney is doing something unusual. She accuses the parents of the alleged shooter of manslaughter. Not only did they buy the gun from him. They ignored his disturbing behavior, searching for ammunition on his cell phone, drawing violent pictures at school. The school alerted them, and they didn’t seem to care much. Should more prosecutors hold parents accountable when they don’t do enough to keep their guns out of the hands of children who use them for violent purposes? “

Murphy said, “If parents break the law, they should be held accountable. I don’t know the details of Michigan law. Looks like these parents bought a gun for their kid, who never should have owned it. If parents break state law, they should be held accountable. I think that should give us some serious thought about safe storage laws. In Connecticut, we have a law on the books that requires parents to safely store their guns. If these guns are not locked up with minors in the house, they can be held responsible without a doubt. Michigan does not have this law on the books. But we should adopt this on a national basis. I think we would get a lot of gun owners to back us up, to say, if you have minors in the house, if you have guns, you have to keep those guns under lock and key. If we made this change, not only would it prevent some of these horrific incidents of mass shooting. “

He added, “A safe storage law may be the thing that might attract a bipartisan compromise, one that might gain the support of many common sense gun owners. It is not about taking arms from anyone. It’s just a matter of saying if you’re going to own the gun, put it away safely.
