Delta Air Lines says goodbye to the basic economy – but don’t worry, it’s not going anywhere.
The airline announced on Thursday a change of mark of many of its tariff categories, including the end of the nickname “the basic economy”. Tickets will now be known as Delta Main Basic as part of an economical class at three levels – basic, classic and additional – each with variable mileage accumulations, boarding groups and flexibility for changes.

Delta Comfort + was also renamed Delta Comfort, while the first class is now Delta first. Delta Premium Select and Delta Stay unchanged. These four categories will each have classic and additional levels, giving a large total of 11 cost options to go from point to to point B.
The new names will give leaflets “More choices and more clarity, “Delta said.
The main basic will keep the benefits familiar (or their absence): seats not allocated before recording, the lowest boarding priority, no miles, no bags and cancellation fees with only partial credit reimbursements. This is a clear difference compared to the higher economic ticket, which includes selecting seats, anterior boarding, more points than the level of level and a full refund.
Delta and most of its competitors introduced the basic economic rates for the first time around 2012 to compete with low -cost carriers like Spirit and Southwest. Despite their restrictions, they have proven success with travelers concerned about the budget.
But in recent times, premium seats have been the manufacturers of money from airlines while they are facing a slowdown in ticket sales. At the end of 2024, Delta president Glen Hauenstein told investors that the company saw more premium demand than economic seats. As such, he concentrates the additional capacity on these more expensive tickets, a strategy which he hopes to triumph over budgetary carriers.
