Delhi hospital tragedy | LG orders investigation into fire that killed seven babies

In response to a tragic incident on May 25 that claimed the lives of seven newborns in a fire at a neonatal hospital, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has issued a mandate for an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Directorate (ACB). Saxena headed an inquiry into the registration and regulatory management of private nursing homes in Delhi.

Seven newborns were killed and five injured in a massive fire at Baby Care New Born Child Hospital, a private neonatal hospital in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar. Officials said he was operating illegally with an “expired” license and without permission from the fire department.

At the time of the incident, 12 babies were admitted to the hospital. One of them died instantly, 11 were transferred to a nearby hospital where six were pronounced dead on arrival.

“In the current matter regarding the tragic fire and the nursing home… the ACB (Anti-Corruption Directorate) is directed to undertake a thorough investigation into the registration of nursing homes in the city in order to assess how many nursing homes are operating without valid registration and whether those with valid registration are complying with the prescribed standards as provided for under the Delhi Nursing Homes Registration Act, 1953 and rules made thereunder. the LG said in a note to the chief secretary.

The survey will also check whether the grant of registration or its renewal by the health ministry is done after 100 per cent inspection of the site, Saxena said.

“Furthermore, many nursing homes in the city have never applied for registration but are still in operation. Even nursing homes that have valid registration may not meet the safety and regulatory standards prescribed in the homes of Delhi Registration Act, 1953 and the rules made thereunder,” he added.
