Defining Sean Payton’s Broncos success in 2023

Parker Gabriel, Broncos reporter: The round table is back. So let’s come back. And the NFL season too, y’all. Can you believe it’s week 1 already? In 18 short weeks it will be January and we will all be immersed in a new training quest – in fact, check that out. Probably not. Never say never, but even in a season that initially seems to have a wide variety of potential outcomes, it would be a shock. Speaking of results, what makes for a successful first year for head coach Sean Payton? I say it has to include the playoffs. There is a difference between having a successful season and a productive A. Maybe Denver could go 8-9, get Russell Wilson back on track to some extent, and miss the playoffs because the roster just isn’t holding up to NFL attrition. It could be a productive year that sets the stage for a promising 2024. But the label of achievement, given league parity, only applies if they at least get on a plane to Cincinnati for a wild-card game. arrives in mid-January. What do you say, gentlemen?
Sean Keeler, sports columnist: 1. Beat the Raiders at home. Because you have years to pay. 2. Beat the Chiefs at least once. Because you have a deadline of ten years. 3. A winning season. If there’s a playoff, awesome, awesome, light a cigar. At the end of the line ? Rebuild an identity. Rebuild a culture. Be like Coach Prime, baby! For the past five years, the sticker on the Denver Broncos’ right pectoral read “HELLO, MY NAME IS // ‘We won Super Bowl 50!’ What have you been up to since Despicable Me 3 came out? If Payton can get the swagger back to Empower Field, he’s halfway there. Baby Bill Parcells is now the face of the Broncos, and he’s a face half of New York already wants to hit. If Payton can make fans in Kansas City and Vegas hate him more than Broncos Country before New Year’s Eve, mission accomplished.
Ryan McFadden, Broncos reporter: Clearly, Payton is in playoff or fail mode. However, if the Broncos miss the playoffs but go 9-8 and Wilson gets back on track, I would consider that a successful first year. They’ll end their seven-game losing streak drought while Wilson proves he still has something in the tank. Yes, Broncos Country would love to see their team back in the playoffs. But if Denver can top .500, Wilson looks sharp, and the defense continues to be in the top 10 in the league, I think that sets up a promising 2024 season where expectations can be even higher.
