India’s Deepthi Jeevanji broke the world record in the women’s 400m in the T20 category, clocking 55.07 seconds which helped her win gold at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, Monday.
Deepthi ended up breaking the record previously held by American Breanna Clark, who had clocked 55.12 seconds in the running category at last year’s World Championships in Paris.
Turkey’s Aysel Onder and Ecuador’s Lizanshela Angulo took silver and bronze with times of 55.19 seconds and 56.68 seconds respectively on the fourth day of the event.

Deepthi had already set the Asian record of 56.18 seconds in Sunday’s heats, thereby qualifying for the final.
The T20 category is intended for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Yogesh Kathuniya then added a silver medal in the men’s discus throw in the F56 category with an effort of 41.80 meters.
The F56 category is intended for athletes who compete in field events in a seated position. Different athletes, including those with amputees and spinal cord injuries, compete in this class.
India’s total now stands at four medals: 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.
On Sunday, Nishad Kumar (T47 high jump) and 200m runner Preethi Pal (T35 200m race) won silver and bronze, respectively.
The championships will continue until May 25.
