Decomposing body found in closet of nursing home

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — A family believes the body found in a closet at a Florida nursing home is that of a 71-year-old man who disappeared from the facility nearly two weeks earlier.

Elin Etienne’s family believes it was her decomposing body that was found Monday in a closet at North Dade Hospital. & On Aug. 23, North Miami police issued a missing person alert for him, a day after he disappeared. He had been hospitalized there after suffering a brain aneurysm in early August, his family said.

Ruth Keisha Etienne, her granddaughter, told WTVJ-TV that the nursing home administrators never informed them that a body was found. She said an anonymous caller notified them, so they contacted the administrators.

“They said they found him in a closet and he was already decomposing, and they refused to let us see the body,” Etienne told the station. “And we tried to talk to the people at the nursing home, but they refused to talk to us. They don’t want to talk to us. I wonder why?”

The nursing home declined to comment Wednesday. The Miami-Dade County medical examiner’s office said Wednesday that the body had not yet been identified. Police said they were investigating the death.

State nursing home regulators did not immediately respond to a call Wednesday seeking comment.
