Dear Abby: I am a 67 year old man who has two sisters. Recently, I was with my younger sister “Mitzi”, installing blinds. During my stay, I received a phone call from my girlfriend. (We are together nine months, after my wife died last year.) My girlfriend and I discussed finances, including the subject of my older sister, “Carolyn”, borrowed from money last year.
A few days later, Carolyn called me, turned upside down to have discussed our financial arrangement with my girlfriend. (It turns out that Mitzi had recorded the conversation on his ring cameras while I was there alone.) Now, the two sisters are angry with me. It all started when I told Mitzi that joining forces with his ex-husband who verbally and physically abused years earlier was a mistake. He was arrested for domestic violence and imprisoned for a while for committing other crimes.
Mitzi did not have my permission to share this recording that I had no knowledge. She did not participate in the conversation. Now my girlfriend is worried because she was looking forward to building a good relationship with my sisters and only thinks Carolyn will leave her. Advice? – Drama in New York
Dear drama-replute: Just this: Remember that none of this would have happened if you had not rendered service to Sister Mitzi by installing its blinds.
Unless you swore secret, there is no reason why you should not have discussed the loan you made to Sister Carolyn with your girlfriend.
If they continue to give you a hard time, warn them that if they do not apologize for having raped your private life, you have finished being their handyman and their lender. You should also specify that, at least, you expect them to treat your girlfriend with respect.
