“Disgruntled” employee opens fire on Delaware County business

“This is a story that repeats itself too often in the United States of America,” Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said at a morning news conference, calling the shooting “an absolute tragedy.” “A disgruntled employee walked into a linen store — the Delaware County linen store behind us — and shot five people, five co-workers.”

Officers were dispatched to the Delaware County Linen on West 4th Street — near Hayes Street — around 8:30 a.m., Delaware County dispatchers said. The family-owned business is a linen rental and laundry service business that has been in business since 1988, according to its website. It primarily serves restaurants, country clubs, hotels and other businesses in Pennsylvania and some surrounding states.

Stollsteimer said at least five people were shot and two died after showing up for work. The shooting took place inside and outside the business and a handgun was used, investigators said.

“It’s a sad situation,” Chester Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky said.

Chester officers transported one of the shooting victims to the hospital.

Stollsteimer asked people to pray for the three injured at the hospital.

An employee who was inside the business at the time of the shooting told NBC10’s Rosemary Connors that the gunshots came as a surprise. Many people join the company early.

Stollsteimer said that although the suspected shooter – an “angry” worker – had had problems with co-workers in the past, there were no signs that the shooting had taken place.

“It’s a horrible tragedy that this entire community is feeling right now,” Stollsteimer said.

Police in neighboring town arrest suspected shooter

The suspected shooter – who works in the store – was taken into custody, the prosecutor said, while noting that the threat no longer existed.

Police in Trainer, Pa., stopped the shooter’s car after a description of the suspect’s vehicle was released, Gretsky said.

Expect a large police presence to continue in the area as police from other departments said there was a countywide response to the scene.

Officers with guns drawn could be seen opening the doors of the business in the minutes after the shooting.
