Several geese were found dead last weekend near a pond at Gettysburg College, the college confirmed.
Pennsylvania Game Commission officials were investigating reports of a dead goose Saturday at Quarry Pond when they discovered several other dead geese, Gettysburg College said in a letter to the campus community.
The college said the geese would be tested for avian flu, a virus that commonly spreads among birds and other animals. Test results are not yet available.
Humans can also contract bird flu from sick animals or surfaces touched by sick animals. The public health risk from avian flu is currently low, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Until further notice, please avoid the Quarry Pond area and do not feed or approach the birds,” the college said.
