Inside the airport on Thursday morning, the atmosphere was dark while the blocked passengers were relaxing while waiting for the flights to resume.
They bypassed the teams of cameras and looked at the terminal windows on the Potomac river, where recovery efforts were barely visible in the distance. The officials announced earlier that they did not expect to find survivors.
“It is a drawback for us, but it is nothing compared to what these families experience,” said Chris Adams, whose return flight to Texas has been delayed by several hours. “Life is simply too short.”
Aster Anemecael had been at the airport since Wednesday evening with his elderly father, who was flying in Indiana to visit his family. She said that she had spent a large part of the long night thinking about the victims and their families.
“I have been crying since yesterday,” she said, her suffocating voice.
