“It will do the trick,” said Vencl after emerging from his 1.5-minute swim in the water measured at 3 degrees Celsius and pumping his fist in celebration.

The 38-year-old changed the location of the record attempt for a former quarry to Lahost, 100 kilometers northwest of Prague, of a glacial lake in Austria due to COVID restrictions that made travel difficult internationals.

Vencl, who fell into the water through a hole in the ice a foot thick before emerging from another, broke the previous record of 250 feet set by Denmark’s Stig Avall Severinsen in October 2017 in southern Greenland.
