It was 19 degrees in the sun Wednesday morning. It was so cold that you had to thaw your hair before you could brush it. It was so cold that it was reminiscent of something Frank Gifford said early in the afternoon of Dec. 31, 1967, a few hours before kickoff at the Ice Bowl at Lambeau Field.

There are no better days than these to think about baseball, close your eyes and dream of days when you won’t be tempted to pour boiling water over your head to try to stop shivering. This is how I find myself at American Family Field in Milwaukee on October 3, 2024, at 8:30 p.m. local time, 9:30 a.m. back in New York. There is one out. He worked a 3-to-1 count on Williams.
