Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has provided an update on his future after leaving Old Trafford last summer.

After 12 years at United, De Gea left the Red Devils last June when his £375,000-a-week contract expired.

De Gea won five major honors with United, including the Premier League in 2013, and was named the club’s player of the year, but 10 months after his departure he is still without a new club.

The Spanish goalkeeper is now 33 years old, and some fans may be wondering if he could retire after not being picked up by a top team this season. However, De Gea promised to return in a post on social media.

Alongside a photo of him training on what appears to be a non-league pitch, De Gea left a three-word caption which simply read: “I’ll be back.”

His message of defiance is the clearest indication yet that he has no plans to hang up his boots and believes he still has much left to offer.

De Gea was linked with a sensational return to United at the end of 2023 after his successor Andre Onana’s difficult start at Old Trafford.

Onana made a number of errors during United’s disastrous Champions League campaign, which saw them finish last in their group and crash out of Europe before Christmas.

But Erik ten Hag chose to stand by the Cameroonian, and Onana began to reward that confidence in the second half of the season.

He made a crucial penalty save in United’s shootout win over Coventry at Wembley on Sunday, as United booked their place in a second successive FA Cup final.

Newcastle also considered a shock move for De Gea after Nick Pope suffered a dislocated shoulder in a 1-0 win over United in December.

Pope is yet to return to action, but Newcastle have opted not to pursue De Gea and have instead relied on Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius in Pope’s absence.

De Gea was linked with a sensational return to Old Trafford in late 2023 after Andre Onana's difficult debut at United, but the Cameroonian has retained Erik ten Hag's faith.

Another Premier League club – Nottingham Forest – was also reportedly interested in signing De Gea in January, but they ultimately brought in Matz Sels from Strasbourg on deadline day.

De Gea appears to have enjoyed his time off, although he insisted he plans to return at some point, as he went on holiday to the Bahamas with his wife earlier this month.

He was criticized on social media by his former United teammate Juan Mata after posting a photo where he looked sunburned.

De Gea has also kept in touch with some members of United’s current squad, as he met Bruno Fernandes, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Tom Heaton for coffee earlier this season.
