David Beckham has revealed he was the subject of thousands of messages after Lionel Messi’s transfer to Inter Miami was announced.
The 2022 World Cup winner announced last month that he was set to join the MLS giants after exhausting his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.
Messi had been linked with a big money move to Saudi Arabia, while Barcelona were desperate to bring him back to the Nou Camp.
But he has decided to choose a new adventure in America, where he will play alongside former Blaugrana teammate Sergio Busquets.
His transfer is set to be officially announced by Inter Miami on Wednesday, with club co-owner Beckham lifting the lid on the incredible reaction he received after the news broke.
Beckham was interviewed by producer Ben Winston about the leadership qualities for launching a scholarship for Jewish educators on behalf of Lira Winston – Ben’s mother and wife of famed fertility pioneer Lord Robert Winston – who died suddenly in December 2021 at the age of 72 with a heart attack.
Commenting on Messi’s arrival at Miami, he said: “The team is one of the things I’m most proud of and one of the hardest things I’ve done in my career, but also the team. one of the most rewarding.
“A few weeks ago I woke up to thousands of messages on my phone.
“I was in Japan at the time – news had come that Lionel was coming to Miami.
“From the start, my dream was to bring the best players in the game to Miami, wherever they are in their careers – I made that commitment to our fans.
“So when you hear that one of the best players, if not the best player, who has won everything in the game, and who is still a great player and still young and doing what he does, wants to come and play for my team, it was a huge moment.
“So it’s an exciting time – although it hasn’t been officially announced yet.”
Messi will join an Inter Miami side that are entrenched at the bottom of the Eastern Conference after losing 13 of their 19 games.
Sergio Aguero has revealed his close friend was ‘crashed’ when he told him about their disastrous form and position in the league.
But he will have to wait until August 20 to help Inter Miami move up the ranks with the MLS season currently on hiatus due to the League Cup.
Inter will face Mexican side Cruz Azul on July 21 which could see Messi make his debut.
