David Arquette Pays Tribute to Crazy Town Singer Shifty Shellshock

David Arquette pays tribute to his good friend, Crazy Town singer Shifty Shellshock. The “Butterfly” singer – real name Seth Binzer – died Monday at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 49.

“Sending all my love to my brother Seth @therealcrazytown and his family. Shifty as I knew him when we first met at a graffiti fight in a Los Angeles yard,” Arquette captioned a montage of photos and videos via Instagram on Thursday.

“He was an incredible man with a big heart. We shared many of the same struggles and I want his family to find love and healing during this difficult time,” he continued.

“Thanks for the beautiful pictures @moonfrye Champions never die, they just go fight somewhere else. Love you kid.”

Some of Arquette’s photos with Shellshock included a sit-down with actor Seth Green and “Punky Brewster” actress Soleil Moon Frye.

The same day, Shellshock’s manager confirmed that the late musician died after taking a “lethal combination of prescription drugs and street drugs,” he told People.

“Seth Binzer, after battling his addiction and the quick success of Crazy Town with ‘Butterfly,’ has never been able to fight his addictions more successfully,” Howie Hubberman told the outlet. “We all tried, but ultimately we all failed, or Shifty would still be here.”

The “Scream” actor, 52, opened up about his own struggles in an interview with IndieWire in March 2020.

“I’ve been sober for a long time. I followed programs. I looked at what works and what doesn’t work for me. I smoked CBD containing THC. Cannabis helps me manage my mood swings. I am very moody and stressed. I am very critical of myself sometimes,” he said at the time. “I don’t like taking all these psychotropic drugs that mess with my levels, because if I’m playing, I want to be as crazy and sad as possible, or I want to be as happy and full of love as possible. I never smoke cannabis and I never drink when I work. »

At the time, Arquette said he no longer drank hard liquor and didn’t “drink a lot of beer,” but that “it was still a slippery slope.”

“Addiction is different for everyone and many people disagree with what I say. I just try to be honest about it, so no one is surprised,” he explained. “I understand that people judge me for it, but I try to live my life the best I can. I have never been a completely sober person. »

Shellshock, meanwhile, struggled with addiction for years and appeared on both VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab” and his next show, “Sober House,” twice.

In 2012, he was reportedly arrested for assault and battery and cocaine possession. According to Variety, that same year, he was admitted to the hospital after losing consciousness and falling into a coma before recovering.

Years later, he was arrested for DUI in Los Angeles in 2022 and charged with another DUI in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 2023.

The rapper group Crazy Town was formed in 1995 and is best known for their 2000 single “Butterfly”, which reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for two non-consecutive weeks. The group broke up in 2003 and was renamed Crazy Town X by Shellshock upon their reconciliation in 2017.

Shellshock is survived by his three children, Halo, Gage and Phoenix.
