When Hagen Walker recently graduated from Davenport North, he wore a little more paper than his compatriots.
Walker, 18, graduated with an associate’s degree in liberal arts – something North offers in partnership with Eastern Iowa Community College. He also obtained an associate degree in science.
Now he plans to go to the state of Utah to study mechanical and aerospace engineering, he said. After that, he wants to work in what he called his “dream businesses”.
“I would love to work at SpaceX or NASA,” he said.
His interest in science and working in the aerospace industry began during his studies after seeing the concepts he was learning used.
“I’ve always been a big fan of math and really enjoyed my calculus lessons, and then when I took physics lessons and it was applied math and applied calculus, I kind of got fell in love with that aspect, ”Walker said.
The associate of science is not something offered through the Davenport Community School District’s partnership with the EICC, so Walker pursued it himself, he said. He took these courses during the summer or online during the school year.
Having both associate’s degrees helps him achieve his goals by meeting the general education requirements he should have met in college, Walker said.
