Dave Portnoy apologizes on behalf of Barstool Sports.
During an interview with Tom Llamas of NBC News on Thursday, Portnoy apologized to Mary Kate Cornett for the employees of Barstool Sports by publishing on the false viral rumor according to which the student Ole Miss had slept with the father of his boyfriend.
“I would apologize,” Portnoy said in Llamas after asking what he would say in Cornett. “I understand why the family is upset.”
Cornett was thrown into the public’s eye in the last month after the rumor spread over several sports media platforms, including by members of Barstool Sports de Portnoy.
Charles Nicholas Longley – who goes through “Nicky Fume” – published comments on Cornett on an official social media account Barstool, according to the Daily Mail.
In addition to Longley, the employees of Barstool Kevin Clancy, also known as KFC, and Jack “Jack Mac” McGuire made comments on the rumor.
“I thought they were really stupid,” Portnoy told NBC about Barstool Sports employees, amplifying unbeknop rumors.
“For me, I have been doing this for a long time and I thought it was clearly a false story,” continued Portnoy. “I thought we were better than that.”
Portnoy previously denied that his company spread rumors on the platforms belonging to Barstool when history broke out in February.
“Barstool Sports has not mentioned this rumor on any of our channels held by the mature bar as far as I know,” Portnoy said in February. “Our publishers instinctively made the decision to avoid this story because it seemed that there was a strong probability, it could have been made. If I am wrong on this subject, I am happy to see where it was published and revisiting.”
Regarding Clancy’s video, Portnoy said: “We do not control the personal social social social workers. All they publish alone is their own business.”
Apart from Barstool, Pat McAfee also promoted the false story of his program, which is broadcast on ESPN.
McAfee made its first public comments concerning the incident during its live program “Big Night Aht” Wednesday after being silent before, although it did not use the name of Cornett.
“Just like the current situation that occurs, where I have many people who say that I should be prosecuted,” said McAfee. “I mean this: I never want to be part of something negative in the life of anyone, never.
“We will try to understand this and make a kind of silver lining in a very terrible situation. You can have this promise from me. ”
Cornett told NBC News last week that McAfee had never asked him questions about the validity of history.
The 19 -year -old has since threatened legal action against McAfee and ESPN for their role in the dissemination of rumors about him.
“I thought it was absolutely ridiculous that an ESPN sporting broadcaster talks about the” sex scandal “of a 19-year-old girl who was completely false,” she said.
