Danielle Collins achieves her goal

Danielle Collins, who will move from 53rd to 22nd in the world, is returning to what now appears to be her peak.

When American Danielle Collins decided that this year would be her last on the WTA circuit, she set herself a simple goal that eluded so many: to win one of the biggest prizes in sport.

On Saturday, the 30-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida, got her hands on that ultimate trophy, winning her first WTA 1000 Series title, with a straight-sets victory over world number four Elena Rybakina.

It was an emotional victory for Collins, in front of her home state crowd in her final appearance in Miami, as she finally achieved the high-profile success that had eluded her.

“I always wanted to win every tournament I entered, but since it was my last year, I was like: I really want to try to win a Masters 1000 this year. It’s really important to me. It’s something I’ve talked about a lot with everyone close to me,” she said.

“I really wanted to make an effort to be able to bring out my best tennis. I’m so glad I was able to figure out some of the physical things I needed to do to climax at the right time and feel ready to go.

“I definitely did this tournament, but it’s a goal, yes. So I have to check it off the list,” she added with a smile.

Collins, who will move from 53rd to 22nd in the world rankings on Monday, is leaving what now appears to be her peak, a move that comes amid a career that began differently than most others on the women’s tour.

While the vast majority of talented young players opt for the homeschool route and enter the professional ranks as teenagers, Collins decided to finish his education, earn a master’s degree in sports management and playing college tennis for the University of Florida. and the University of Virginia.

She won two national collegiate titles but didn’t turn professional until she was 22 and, unsurprisingly, her success came later in her career with titles in 2021 in Palermo and San Jose and a participation in the final of the 2022 Australian Open.

But the decision to make 2024 his final season certainly appears to have brought a change in approach that has paid off.

“I definitely think part of the reason I played so well and did a good job today was because I had that mentality of — I’m going to enjoy every minute of this,” Collins said .

I’m going, I’m going

“It’s my senior year, it’s my final season, and these are some of my final events. I want to remember these moments.

“I’m just trying to get better. Today I woke up and when we were in the car I said, ‘Oh, this is going to be my first time in a final in my home country and I have a lot of support from the crowd. We changed the playlist, we got really excited.

“It was so much fun. This day was the best,” Collins added.

Knowing there won’t be many moments left to savor also means that Collins, who had her dog Quincy with her in Miami this week and has been playing golf in her free time, is determined to enjoy the victory with his relatives. .

“I have continued to play in recent months in back-to-back tournaments. Now I can celebrate with friends.

“We are going to have a great weekend. We have a pickleball tournament tomorrow. I’m competitive, so we always do competitive activities,” she laughed.

“And I have a night out on the town.” I haven’t done this in a while. I hope I can stand and wear something other than tennis.
