Dad meets baby boy after waking up from COVID coma

It was a pandemic miracle.

Photos have captured the heartwarming moment a British man met his newborn son Oliver for the first time – after spending more than a month in a COVID-induced coma.

“It was my first time meeting Oliver,” Andrew Allen, 32, told SWNS of the “crushing” occasion. It came five weeks after the Manchester father-of-two fell into a comatose, which coincidentally was also the same day his wife Charlotte gave birth to their baby boy.

Allen’s heartbreaking saga began on July 19, 2021, when the aerospace engineering worker, who had only received one stroke at the time, began to feel ill after a colleague tested positive for coronavirus.

Initially thinking he had the flu, the man began to suspect it was COVID after his symptoms began to resemble those related to the Delta variant of COVID-19.

“I lost my smell and taste after I got the negative,” said Allen, who also suffered from severe vomiting and diarrhea. “So I was thinking in my head, ‘That must be COVID, that. I don’t know how it could be anything else?

About a week later, Allen’s pregnant wife gave birth and was rushed to the hospital to give birth, SWNS reported. This development devastated her ailing husband as he knew he would not be able to accompany her on the big day due to his illness.

Oliver was born at 5.35am the next morning, just hours before his father was rushed to hospital with difficulty breathing.

“I was seriously ill,” Allen described of his labored breathing, which his visiting mother likened to a “death rattle.”

The patient added: “My oxygen stats were at 35, which is apparently very, very low – and one of the worst cases they’ve ever seen.”

Despite his deteriorating condition, the proud dad attempted to notify paramedics of his son’s birth, but they reprimanded him for removing his oxygen mask.

Upon arrival at the medical facility, Allen was placed in a medically induced coma.

The COVID-19 patient woke up three weeks later to find hospital staff had posted a photo of his 5-year-old daughter Imogen holding her newborn son.

“At the time, I just remember thinking, ‘This must be the baby,'” exclaimed Allen, who recalled feeling “emptied” from missing the birth of Oliver.

Unfortunately, as the frustrated father was still recovering from COVID, it would take another agonizing three weeks before he could meet his male offspring face to face.

He was finally able to meet his son in the flesh in the hospital, and see his daughter and his wife. “I was on a high-dependency ward and was coming down to a ward because I was obviously better — and the consultant arranged for me to see them in the hallway,” Allen described.

The Briton found the occasion doubly touching as he hadn’t seen his ‘daughter at that time for about three-and-a-half weeks as well’.

“I spend pretty much every day that I’m not working with my daughter,” he said. “So it was very overwhelming.”

Fortunately, Allen has almost recovered from the virus and is now back with his family, according to SWNS. Nevertheless, the new dad says he is “nowhere near 100 per cent”, adding that he lost around 55 pounds in hospital.

“I’m now rebuilding my muscles and back to full time work, but at the end of each day I still feel tired,” he lamented.

This isn’t the first time someone has miraculously come out of a COVID coma.

In November, a Florida woman stunned her family members after waking up from her coronavirus coma the same day she was due to be taken off life support.
