Only a month from which “Wicked” ended his season of awards at the Academy Awards and seven months before his release in theaters, “Wicked: For Good” is ready to bring us back on the road to the yellow brick. The second part of the successful musical adaptation Broadway follows the heroine Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) while the inhabitants of Oz are manipulated to revise it, and the best friend Glinda (Ariana Grande) is forced to become a spokesperson for the opposition led by Madeame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) and Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).
The crowd of Cinemacon had its first overview of some of the images of the film on Wednesday during the presentation of Universal, as well as a live performance of a mixture of part of the music of the show, played by an orchestra of 43 pieces led by Rickey Minor. “Wicked: For Good” opens in theaters on November 21, 2025.
Erivo and Big both took the stage to present “for good” alongside director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt. CHU recalled that this is the third year that “Wicked” closed the presentation of Cinemacon from Universal; “Thank goodness, it worked,” he said. Platt also recognized the risk that the studio took by dividing the part into two parts, but he said that the play saw record feedback from the box-office following the popularity of the film. Erivo and Grande spoke of sneaking in certain song projections and singing and wrapped their fabrics to go back on tour and do the same.
So what have we seen from the film in the colosseum hall? “There is no step back,” says Elphaba to open what is a complete trailer for the film. We see Glinda putting on his emblematic pink dress and her tiara, Fiyero leading his “hot squadron on your trail”, Elphaba Skywriting “The Wizard Lies”, and even Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the loose lion standing in front of the Wizard being invited to bring him the Witch Witche of the Broom in the West. The trailer is marked on the song “For good” of the musical, and it ends with an exchange between Grande and Erivo: “You are the only friend I have ever had,” said Elphaba to Glinda. “And I had so many friends,” she replies, “but only one who had ever had any importance.”
Fans of the musical will know that act two of the show takes a much darker tone than the first half, Elphaba and Glinda disagreed and the grip of the old on his own magic leading to chaotic misadventures. The connective tissue between “wicked” and its narrative suite, “The Wizard of Oz”, also takes a greater concentration while the original stories behind characters like The Scarecrow and The Tin Man are revealed, as well as how a Kansas house ends up falling from the sky to Munchkinland. Director Jon M. Chu also noted that Dorothy Gale, whose role is brief in musical, will be shown more in the film.
Addressing Indiewire in December 2024, the distribution member Jonathan Bailey, who plays the love interest of Elphaba, Fiyero, shared that people should not expect “Wicked: For Good” to be as light and fun as the first film. He said at the time: “I am really excited for a quarter of a tone.
In addition to Bailey, Erivo, Grande, Yeoh and Goldblum who all return to their respective roles, Ethan Slater (Boq), Marissa Bode (Nessarose) and Bowen Yang (Pfannee) will also be presented in the film. “Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good” were shot at the same time, with the decision to divide the musical into two parts before production.
“While we are preparing production in the past year, it has become impossible to fight against the story of ‘Wicked’ ‘in a single film without making him real damage,” wrote CHU on X, formerly known as Twitter in April 2022 announcing the choice. “While we try to cut songs or cut characters, these decisions started to feel fatal compromises to the source material that has all entertained us for so many years. We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and to make a film ‘` nasty’ ‘but two! With more space, we can tell the trips’ `Wicked ”, because it was supposed And surprise for these beloved characters. ”
The first half of the two parties reported almost three-quarters of a billion dollars at the world box office, as well as 10 Oscar price nominations, the best film, the best actress (Erivo) and the best support actress (large). He won two Oscars for the best costume design and the best production design. CHU also managed a victory for the best director of the ‘Choice Movie Awards Critics.
