Crystal Palace are reportedly considering a “significant offer” for Adam Wharton this summer, according to talkSPORT.
Bayern Munich have long been interested in the 20-year-old midfielder, who has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough in the Premier League with the Eagles.
Wharton only joined Palace on February 1 from Blackburn in a stunning £22.5 million move for the then 19-year-old, with the south London club paying £18 million sterling in advance.
Bayern were then interested in the teenager, as were Chelsea, following their rapid rise to the league, but Palace won the race.
It could be a costly mistake from both European giants, with Palace now prepared to demand a hefty fee if a club calls this summer – and it is understood Bayern Munich remain keen.
The deal for Wharton was another shrewd move by Eagles bosses, who would have hoped he would follow the same trajectory as Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze at the club.
Olise and Eze were also poached from the second tier – from Reading and Queens Park Rangers, respectively – and became key stars in Palace’s first team, with both now linked with possible big-money moves.
Wharton’s first three months at Selhurst Park were certainly memorable, having quickly become an integral part of Palace manager Oliver Glasner’s starting line-up.
The young midfielder made 15 appearances, playing a major role in Palace’s 4-0 demolition of Manchester United, and contributed with three assists, including one in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Wolves.
He has even been tipped for a late call-up to England’s Euro 2024 squad, with bookmakers reducing the chances of his name appearing on Gareth Southgate’s list this summer.
talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham is certainly a fan, as he remarked after the win over United: “I could go through the whole Palace team last night and give them high marks out of ten.
“But Adam Wharton was absolutely superb in central midfield.
“He worked hard, had quality on the ball, good footballing intelligence.
“He’s only 20, but he’s made the progression from the Championship mid-season look easy. 10/10.”
